Whispers Of Nature

Art is not a mirror, but a crystal. It creates its own forms (Oscar Wilde)

25 years after his first exhibition in Zurich, Markus B. Komminoth returns to Hottingerplatz. Since his move to the Grisons village of Flerden, nature, light and the theme of radiance have shaped his artistic work in new ways.

The Piz Beverin – right outside his door – becomes a silent reference point. Materials that have emerged from the depths of the earth, such as rock crystal, quartz and Grisons slate, find their way into his works and are reinterpreted. Encased in concrete or transformed through refinement, works arise in which authenticity and change meet.

Even organic finds like pine cones or eggshells become part of his visual language – seemingly worthless items acquire a new presence. Komminoth's works move between observation of nature and inner search, between silence and radiance.

More information

Komminoth was born in 1969 in Doncaster, England, and grew up in Domat/Ems and Maienfeld. Since 2001, he has exhibited his works in solo and group exhibitions at various locations in Switzerland. He lives and works as a freelance artist and crystal seeker in Flerden on Heinzenberg.

He is driven by two passions: art and crystals. In some of his works, he combines both into a harmonious coexistence. However, it all began in 1991 with the first «Close-ups» (photorealistic portraits), such as that of H. R. Giger. These early works were created during a study stay in England. From these beginnings, his artistic work has steadily evolved.

After moving from Zurich to Flerden, he discovered nature and the joy of crystal seeking with remarkable intensity. The Piz Beverin looms right outside his door – a mountain well known among crystal collectors. Crystal seeking has become a passion for him, almost an obsession.

In his current works, Komminoth also deals with organic materials from nature, such as fragmented pine cones gnawed by squirrels, which he shapes into flowers and gilds – a transformation that initially puzzles the viewer and provokes thought. He also uses chicken eggs or eggshells in his latest series in a variety of ways: something simple, sustainable, and often overlooked from nature, which would otherwise end up on the compost or in the bin.

He is an indefatigable seeker, always open to new experiences.
